Issues in Intersensory Perception for Interactive Systems

چکیده

We present a novel methodology for building highly integrated multimodal systems. Our approach is motivated by neurological and behavioral theories of sensory perception in humans and animals. We argue that perceptual integration in multimodal systems needs to happen at all levels of the individual perceptual processes. Rather than treating each modality as a separately processed, increasingly abstracted pipeline – in which integration over abstract sensory representations occurs as the final step – we claim that integration and the sharing of perceptual information in interactive systems must also occur at the earliest stages of sensory processing.

The development of intersensory temporal perception: an epigenetic systems/limitations view.

Several theories have stressed the importance of intersensory integration for development but have not identified specific underlying integration mechanisms. The author reviews and synthesizes current knowledge about the development of intersensory temporal perception and offers a theoretical model based on epigenetic systems theory, proposing that responsiveness to 4 basic features of multimod...

The development of infant intersensory perception: advantages of a comparative convergent-operations approach.

Despite impressive demonstrations of human infants' intersensory capabilities over the past several decades, there has been little focus on the contributions of prenatal and postnatal experience or the specific developmental processes underlying the emergence of intersensory functioning. Research with nonhuman animals has, however, provided a number of advances in understanding early intersenso...

The development of face perception in infancy: intersensory interference and unimodal visual facilitation.

Although research has demonstrated impressive face perception skills of young infants, little attention has focused on conditions that enhance versus impair infant face perception. The present studies tested the prediction, generated from the intersensory redundancy hypothesis (IRH), that face discrimination, which relies on detection of visual featural information, would be impaired in the con...

A Novel Interactive Possibilistic Mixed Integer Nonlinear Model for Cellular Manufacturing Problem under Uncertainty

Elaborating an appropriate cellular manufacturing system (CMS) could solve many structural and operational issues. Thereby, considering some significant factors as worker skill, machine hardness, and product quality levels could assist the companies in current competitive environment. This paper proposes a novel interactive possibilistic mixed integer nonlinear approach to minimize the total co...

Increasing task difficulty enhances effects of intersensory redundancy: testing a new prediction of the Intersensory Redundancy Hypothesis.

Prior research has demonstrated intersensory facilitation for perception of amodal properties of events such as tempo and rhythm in early development, supporting predictions of the Intersensory Redundancy Hypothesis (IRH). Specifically, infants discriminate amodal properties in bimodal, redundant stimulation but not in unimodal, nonredundant stimulation in early development, whereas later in de...
